Millions of dogs live in cities; however, there are some challenges that come along with owning a dog in the city. Finding ways to walk your dog and ensuring that he is getting an adequate amount of exercise can be tough. Also taking care of your dog’s house training needs and finding ways for your dog to socialize with other dogs and people on a regular basis can be another problem.
Things To Consider About Having A Dog In The City
Exercise
If you live in the city then it’s important for you to make sure that your dog gets plenty of exercise. Many dogs who live in the city are Toy or small breeds so they may not need a lot of exercise, but keep in mind that all dogs need some form of exercise, even if it is just going out for a regular walk.
Exercise is also good for your dog’s physical as well as mental health. Dogs that don’t get enough exercise are more likely to develop behavioral problems such as chewing on furniture or excessive barking. To avoid some of these issues, make sure your dog is getting enough exercise by going out for a long walk each day.
You can also look for enclosed areas where it is safe to allow your dog to run off-leash with permission. These areas are particularly important if you have a larger breed dog. Dog parks can also be great places for exercise as long as you use a park where people follow the rules with their dogs and supervise them closely.
House Training
Some owners prefer to teach their dogs to use potty pads or a litter box so that they don’t have to go outside each time their dog needs to relieve themselves. This can be useful in the winter or for dogs that stay home all day while their owners are at work. It can also be helpful for owners who are elderly or ill.
Another great method is to consider having a dog walker come to walk your dog during the day while you are at work. This way your dog is able to get outside to relieve himself especially if you do not want him going in the house.
Whichever method you choose, training is very important so your dog can fit in with your lifestyle.
Socialization
In the city you often have to plan a social life for your dog as he can’t hang out in his own backyard and meet the neighbor’s dog or nearby cats.
In order for your dog to become properly socialized you will need to take him to doggy classes for socialization, or to a dog park where he can play under your supervision with other dogs in the neighborhood. Most dogs are generally happier if they have some sort of interaction with other pets. You should also teach your dog how to behave around other people so he has good manners when he goes out in public.
Another great idea is to check with your vet, local kennel club, local animal shelter, or local dog trainer to find out about opportunities for classes, events and socialization for your dog. There is always something going on that you and your dog can take part in but all you have to do is ask since your dog can’t do it himself.
